Debunking Gut Health Myths
The emergence of social media has had both positive and negative impacts on the topic of gut health. On the one hand, it's great to see the subject gaining so much attention. However, on the other hand, there is an overwhelming amount of misinformation floating around in the online space.
So, let's explore the facts and dispel the myths!
Myth #1: Bloating is normal

Feeling bloated after meals is super common, but that doesn't make it normal. Your body is basically waving a red flag saying "Hey, something's not quite right in the digestion department". It could be the way you eat your meals, lack of stomach acid, not chewing enough, food choices, and so much more. Each person is unique, so the reason behind the bloating can vary. But one thing's for sure - it's a common issue, not a normal one.
Myth #2: Gluten + dairy are always bad for the gut.

Gluten and dairy have been the subject of significant scrutiny on social media when it comes to gut health. In some cases, short-term elimination of these foods may prove helpful in addressing specific digestive issues. However, the goal should always be to reintroduce them into the diet at the earliest opportunity. Many gluten and diary containing foods are rich in nutrients that can actually promote a healthy gut microbiome. Less is not more when it comes to gut health.
Myth #3: Issues in the gut only impact the gut

Gut health has a significant impact on the overall health of the body. The gut plays a crucial role in digesting and absorbing nutrients, maintaining a healthy immune system, and producing important hormones and neurotransmitters. When the gut is compromised, it can lead to a wide range of health issues, such as inflammation, autoimmune diseases, mental health disorders, skin problems, and more!
Myth #4: You need to spend $$$ on supplements

While certain supplements may be beneficial in addressing specific gut issues, they should not be considered a cure-all for gut health problems (*cough cough greens powders cough cough*). There is a TON of work we do before supplements even enter the picture (diet, lifestyle, environment etc.)
Myth #5: Heartburn is caused by an overproduction of stomach acid

Contrary to popular belief, heartburn is often caused by low stomach acid rather than high stomach acid. When the stomach doesn't produce enough acid to properly break down food, it can cause food to stay in the stomach longer than it should. This can lead to fermentation and the production of gas, which can push stomach acid up into the esophagus, causing heartburn. This is why taking antacids or acid-blocking medications may provide temporary relief but can actually worsen the problem in the long term, as they further reduce stomach acid production. Addressing the root cause of low stomach acid, such as through dietary changes or supplementation, is a more effective approach to resolving heartburn.
Myth #6: Probiotics are always good for you.

While probiotics are certainly beneficial for promoting a healthy gut microbiome, they may not always be the best initial choice. It's worth noting that the term "probiotics" encompasses a broad range of strains, each with their unique functions. Just like with medications, specific strains treat specific symptoms. It should also be noted that certain gut conditions like small bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) can actually worsen from taking probiotics.
